Gilgit:
A simmering land and a boundary dispute between the communities of the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) districts and diameters have resurfaced, coinciding with devastating floods which have already beat the two regions.
Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said on Tuesday that the administration was making “serious and effective efforts” to resolve the question of the Nallah Pacifically Legal border.
He stressed that the Ghizer administration and the police manage the question with professionalism and impartiality.
“The brief of the state will in no case be compromised,” he warned, while calling on residents to remember their shared cultural, linguistic and social ties. He described Gilgit-Baltistan as “a bouquet of various flowers”.
The situation became tense on Monday when dozens of armed men were identified in the disputed area, just a day after the floods wreaks havoc on GB. Ghizer and Diamer are among the least affected districts. Head Minister Haji Gulbar Khan summoned a high -level meeting to approach the issue, while local peace committees and other stakeholders were also committed to defusing tensions.
To prevent violence, GB scouts were deployed on both sides of the disputed border, the police and other security agencies providing additional support.
“At a time when natural disasters caused immense suffering, our duty is to share the pain of the other and to support the victims of the floods,” added Faraq. “Disputes can be resolved by Jirgas and negotiations at a later stage. At the moment, the emphasis must remain on rehabilitation and solidarity.”
