Lahore: the chief minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, visited the Ravi river in Shahdara on Thursday where she rose aboard a boat to inspect the situation of the floods more closely.
Later, speaking to the media after visiting the situation of the floods in Shahdara, she said that the province had experienced serious and continuous precipitation in recent weeks, leading to dangerous water levels in the three main rivers.
“I have never seen so much water in the Ravi river. Our rivers were under immense pressure. If we had [Punjab govt] Not prepared in time, the damage could have been catastrophic. »»
She also welcomed the efforts of local administration and rescue teams, saying that no life was lost due to administrative negligence.
More than 50,000 people and a large number of cattle have been successfully moved to safer areas, she added.
Reiterating his government’s commitment to help and recovery, the Punjab Minister -in -Chief said that his government would reach each affected individual and ensure compensation for losses.
“Water is a blessing, but without appropriate storage systems and drainage planning, we are vulnerable … I ordered all departments to present concrete programs on how we can store and manage flood waters in the future,” she added.
12 Killed in the floods of Punjab
Meanwhile, the main minister of Punjab, Marriyum Aurangzeb, said that at least 12 people had lost their lives due to the current flood situation in the province.
Speaking to the media, she said that no deaths had occurred due to the negligence of the government or the Punjab rescue agencies, declaring that rescue operations – in particular via boats – are actively underway.
She added that surveillance efforts were underway and that about six to seven people had been saved from debris.
“Food is provided in the emergency camps, and nearly 200,000 livestock have been moved to safe places with their owners. Citizens are invited to avoid the areas affected by floods and not to approach the water canals for selfies or photos, “she added.
The main minister of Punjab welcomed the tireless efforts of the rescue and administrative teams, declaring that many staff worked for three to five days without sleep.
She also recognized the support of the media and the presence of elected officials and ministers in affected areas.
