Cleanliness to come at a price

The Faisalabad Waste Management Company (FWMC) will begin to collect cleaning costs from residents and business owners of the division from September 1.

An RS10 supplement will be imposed on the failing.

The Punjab cabinet had approved the introduction of a cleanliness costs earlier this year, following the launch of the South Punjab program in 2024.

FWMC spokesperson Mateeb Virk told L’Express PK Press Club that the recovery process would be carried out in phases, starting with commercial consumers.

He said that around 81,000 commercial units had been recorded in Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot and Jhang.

Recording national consumers is underway and their fees will start after three months.

According to the company, commercial consumers have been divided into three categories: small (stores), mediums (schools, colleges) and large (warehouses, looms).

In urban areas, the monthly rate has been set at RS500, RS1,000 and RS3,000 respectively, while in rural areas, rates will be RS300, RS700 and RS2,000.

For domestic consumers in urban areas, the costs will be RS300 per month for a house of 5 Marla, 500 rupees for 5 to 10 Marlas, RS1,000 for 10-20 Marlas, RS2,000 for 20-40 Marlas and RS5,000 for houses above 40 marlas.

In rural areas, the costs will be RS200 for 10 Marlas houses of 10 Marlas.

FWMC finance director Ahsan Nadeem said the Punjab government was writing additional legislation on the application and penalties for non-payment.

Entrepreneurs will be responsible for the distribution of invoices and the recovery guarantee, and will be faced with heavy fines or deductions so as not to achieve the objectives.

He added that municipal inspectors could be temporarily deposited until FWMC recruits his own application staff.

These inspectors will be authorized to impose fines on people found against waste.
