In the middle of the whole fanfare around the iPhone Super-Slim air and the iPhone 17 of the singer, it is easy to consider the standard iPhone 17 as the laid of can of this year’s iPhone range. But for my money, Apple’s latest basic model has been the best value for some time.
Of course, it seems almost identical to the iPhone 16 in pictures, but it is a larger and better device that is as close to pro models as any entry -level iPhone.
To start, there is the long -awaited (and quite frankly long) display upgrade. Before the launch event of this week, I wrote that I would recommend the iPhone 17 on the iPhone 17 Pro if he obtained a 120 Hz refreshment rate, and Apple delivered this request, then some.
Not only does the iPhone 17 have a 120 Hz cooling rate, but it also obtains a full -fledged promotion display technology, which dynamically adjusts this cooling rate between 1 to 120 Hz, depending on what happens on the screen. This helps preserve the life of the telephone battery life and allows a screen always on, while the full rate of 120 Hz will result in a much more fluid scrolling experience compared to the iPhone 16.
As a reminder, the refresh rate refers to the number of times per second, your phone can display a new image. The higher the cooling rate, the smaller a phone screen. As I wrote in this aforementioned pre-launch room, “it may look like the marketing of Mumbo Jumbo if you have been perfectly satisfied with your iPhone at 60 Hz so far, but take it from me-the difference between a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a 120 Hz refreshment rate is absolutely tangible for those who have experienced both.”
But Apple did not stop there. The iPhone 17 also gets a larger screen than the iPhone 16, gracked with Slimmer Bezels. The real dimensions of the two phones are the same, but you will get an OLED Super Retina XDR IPHIP 17 PRO-EQUALING panel of 6.3 inch on the more recent model.
Then there are upgrades under the hood. Apple’s new A19 more powerful chipset can look like an iterative improvement in the A18 – and in terms of raw performance, this will probably be the case. But the A19 will also bring tangible improvements to the lifespan of the battery of the iPhone 17, if the daring promise of Apple of “eight hours of additional video reading compared to the previous generation” is something to pass.
Other apparently significant improvements include Ceramic Shield 2 – the new “three -time and Apple” screen protection technology – an improved ultra -large camera and a new selfie -scene camera, which you will find on the four iPhone 17 models.
But even if you are not sold on the advantages of one of these above -mentioned upgrades, the iPhone 17 is also objectively better than the iPhone 16 compared to its professional counterpart.
Apple has deleted 128 GB’s storage capacities on all iPhone 17 models, but rather than simply increasing the starting price of the iPhone 17 at the price of 256 GB of the iPhone 16, it is stuck with the price of 128 GB of the latter ($ 799 / £ 799 / $ 1,399 at). In other words, you get twice as much storage for the same money.
The iPhone 17 pro, on the other hand, begins at $ 1,099 / £ 1,099/1 999 $ at – It’s the same price as the iPhone 16 GB of 256 GB, but it is also $ 100 £ 100 at the most expensive as the starting price of $ 999 / £ 999 / $ 1799 $ of this particular phone.
Always with me? To say things in another way: the iPhone 17 is $ 299 / £ 299 / $ 600 cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro, while the iPhone 16 was only $ 199 £ / £ 400 cheaper than the iPhone 16 Pro. There are $ 100 $ 100 / £ 100 $ 200 between the two models this year.
All this to say that, despite a boring upgrade by the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 is now, for my money, the best iPhone for most people.
Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro 48MP telephoto lens seems impressive, and if you are looking for one of the best camera phones, you will probably find it in Apple’s latest flagship product.
But for everyone, I do not see that the iPhone 17 Pro is worth the value of $ 299 / £ 299 / $ 600 at the iPhone 17. And my PK Press Club colleagues seem to agree.
“The iPhone 17 was the winner of the Awwe Droping ‘event’ ‘of Apple,” wrote Jamie Richards, editor Jamie Richards while the curtain came across this week’s window, while our news editor, Jake Krol, said that the iPhone 17 “could be the best standard iPhone for years” in his practical magazine of the iPhone 17.
Thus, although the super line and the impressive camera capacities of the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro is certainly tempting, I urge you to sit down and determine if the cheaper iPhone 17 could actually be better suited to your needs.
