- Fujifilm’s first cinema camera wraps a 44x33mm 102MP sensor
- It can shoot an 8K video in a range of formats, including anamorphic
- The pro model costs $ 16,499 (TBC in the United Kingdom and Australia)
It’s been a long time to come, but Fujifilm finally unveiled its very first movie camera, the GFX Eterna 55, after its sweet announcement last year.
As its name suggests, the costly professional cinema camera uses the same “Middle-format” sensor technology as the flagship camera of Fujifilm, the Five-Star GFX100 II camera, but includes it in a high-end cut movie body.
We obtain the same 44×33 mm of second generation sensor of the second generation which is much larger than the complete framework (on the fundamental level under the name of `Middle format ”, but not the real average format that photographers know it), and which triggers a wide range of formats and cinematographic resolutions, including anamorphic 8K.
Make no mistake, this is not a hybrid model like the flagship product of Fujifilm, or a compact cinema camera like the recent Canon Eos C50, but a pro (and expensive) pro model – $ 16,499.95, it is more than double the price of the GFX100 II (TBC in the United Kingdom and Australia).
In addition to the camera, Fujifilm has unveiled a new GF GF 32-90 mm T3.5 Pz Ois Wr ($ 5,999.95 mm, price TBC in the United Kingdom and a dedicated cine lens with an equivalent focal length of 25-71 mm, which is designed to associate with the GFX Eterna 55.
With established players like Red, it is not easy to enter the space of professional cinema, but the GFX Eterna 55 seems to have the tools – and the objectives – to do exactly that. Let’s go through the highlighting features.
A new player in the pro cinema camera space
Many of the GFX ETERNA 55 interns are the same as the GFX100 II – including this 102MP 44X33 Rival sensor, recording up to 8K and the full range of Fujifilm film simulation colors.
Other similarities include the various video codecs, with Apple Apple 422 HQ, Proxy and RAW 12 bits external via HDMI with a basic ISO (800 and 3200) and a dynamic beach exceeding 14EV.
The cameras also use the same W235 battery and save on Cfexpress Type B and SD cards. Combine the GFX ETERNA 55 with a GF lens equipped with the automatic focus, and it also supports the subject detection and the monitoring of the autofocus.
We have already tasted the video capacities of the Eterna 55 through the GFX100 II. What is completely new, however, is the design of the camera, the shooting experience and dedicated video features.
Weighing 4.41 lb / 2kg and measuring at 110.8 x 138.2 x 176.8 mm, the GFX Eterna 55 is not your portable cinema camera, but designed for a tripod or a large-scale platform or a cardan above).
You get twin screens; A point of 3.04 m of 3 inch on board and a removable type of 6.22 m point of 5.22 m with a brightness of 2,000 nals (hood provided). There is also an integrated variable electronic ND filter, with a 2-7EV range that can be modified by half stops, plus a selection of pro-grade connection ports.
Fujifilm enters a notoriously difficult market to break with the GFX Eterna 55. However, it has the specifications to impress. He surely hopes that a short All right By the director / screenwriter Andrew Kightlinger and the director of photography Oren Soffer, who presents the skills of the camera (coming soon), will help do this.
