US assistant secretary of state Christopher Landau warned on Thursday that Washington could take measures against foreigners “praising, rationalizing or shedding light” of the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, adding that he had ordered consular officials to take the appropriate measures.
“In the light of yesterday’s horrible assassination of a leading political figure, I want to emphasize that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” said Landau in an article on the X social media platform.
“I have been disgusted to see some on social networks renting, rationalizing or lighting the event, and I ordered our consular managers to take appropriate action.”
Landau did not explain what such an action would mean.
Some users responded to Landau’s message with screenshots of accounts and publications, although it was not clear if the accounts they reported were owners of American visa.
The number two of the State Department then responded to some of these comments, saying that it would order consular officials to monitor comments on the position, who, from Thursday afternoon, had more than 2,000 responses.
A spokesperson for the State Department, asked questions about the Landau post, said: “This administration does not think that the United States should give visas to people whose presence in our country does not align with American national security interests.”
But the spokesman did not answer questions about the question of whether someone had been identified so that his visa was dismissed or how consular officials would assess the people reported in response to the Landau post.
Kirk, a 31 -year -old author, Podcast host and close to US President Donald Trump, helped strengthen the support of the Republican Party among young voters. He was killed Wednesday by a single shot when he gave a conference at a University of Utah in what President Donald Trump called an “odious assassination”.
The Trump administration continued a radical repression against immigration, including the increase in social media and revokes thousands of student visas and aimed at tightening the duration of others.
