Peshawar:
The Pakistan Human Rights Committee (HRCP) has sentenced the decision of a Swabi Jirga to expel all transgender people from the district. He noted that such unconstitutional actions had to be encouraged to violence against a marginalized community.
The HRCP published the declaration on Sunday after reports emerged in the media that a committee of alumni of 11 members said that all transgender persons would be expelled from Swabi.
In a press release published on X, the HRCP said that no citizen can be deprived of the right to reside, work or win a livelihood throughout Pakistan on the basis of gender identity.
He called on the provincial and district authorities to “immediately ensure the security and dignity of transgender persons in Swabi and to maintain their fundamental rights under the Constitution and the 2018 law on transgender persons (rights protection)”.
The Committee of the Elders in question included the president of Tehsil de Jui-F Maulana Abdul Samad Haqqani and others. Samad said they wanted the transgender to leave the district peacefully and win their livelihoods elsewhere. “As long as they live here, music shows [continue to] Being organized, negatively impacting young people, “he said.
Another member of the Committee, Yasir Khan, said that in the first phase, transgender persons would be invited to leave the district peacefully, and if that would not happen, the district police would be approached.
Committee members have also said that they would probably meet in the coming days and that separately, would also hold a meeting with the district police to discuss a strategy to “expel” transgender people.
