On Wednesday, three agents of the law enforcement was killed and two more injured in Pennsylvania in a confrontation with a shooter who was killed by the police, officials said.
The shooting took place in the canton of Codorus, a community of the county of York in the south-east of Pennsylvania, when the police officers involved returned to the scene of previous police work, said the commissioner of the State police, Colonel Christopher Paris.
“They were there to follow an investigation that started yesterday,” he told journalists at a press conference a few hours later. He refused to develop the circumstances, except to characterize the investigation as “linked to the domestic domain”.
Three officers died and two more hit by gunshots were taken to a neighboring hospital, where they were listed in critical but stable conditions.
At least a local media said the police were trying to serve a search warrant when the gunshots had taken place.
Paris said the shooter had been shot by police. The suspect was not identified publicly and the authorities refused to immediately reveal the law enforcement organizations to whom the officers belonged.
Governor Josh Shapiro went to the hospital to pay tribute to the fallen officers, saying: “It is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for the county of York, for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” He asked for prayers for the families of the victims.
“It is important for you to know that these families who are in mourning right now … as they are proud of their loved ones who have put the uniform to protect us,” he said.
Shapiro also admitted to having received a call from the American prosecutor general Pam Bondi offering necessary federal support.
