- Apple attacked EU laws in a new press briefing
- Airpods Live Translation is the last functionality not to appear in the EU
- The EU is “a shame for confidentiality and security” that Apple says
After years of EU regulatory examination – involving large fines, alternative application stores and much more – apple leaders have expressed pressures from European bureaucracy, saying that users are refused “magical and innovative” experience that the Apple Ecosystem offers.
“”[EU regulators] You want to remove magic – to have a closely integrated experience that Apple offers – and to make us like the other guys, “said Greg Joswiak of Apple in a press point, according to the BBC.
The comments come then that Apple launches the Apple AirPods Pro 3 alongside a new live translation functionality for translations in piping language directly in your ears. The functionality will not be available in Europe, as Apple should do additional work to make it work with other devices in addition to airpods and iPhones.
This interoperability is the key to the EU’s current requirements, and an important part of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) which entered into force in 2022. The EU considers a closed ecosystem as bad for consumers – part of the reason why Apple intelligence was initially blocked for those of the EU countries – while Apple walks it as an advantage.
“Innovation maisse”
The “bureaucrats in Brussels” “create a worst experience for their citizens – our users” said Joswiak. “They undermine innovation, they break our intellectual property and they harm confidentiality and security.”
By opening its platforms to third -party hardware and software – via application download, for example – Apple insists that it must weaken safety and degrade the quality of the experience that comes with a configuration only of Apple.
“”[EU rules] are a good thing for consumers, because it means that you really have the choice of the device you are going to use, and you can make them speak, essentially, “Sébastien Pant, of the European BEUC consumer group, told the BBC.
It is a debate that will probably not end soon, and Apple is not the only affected company. The EU continues to put pressure for the power to decipher private messages in applications like WhatsApp and Signal, which, according to her, will benefit the law enforcement organizations – although for many technological organizations, secure and private encryption for users is a must.
