Sudden floods cause damage to Rs650m to the Faisalabad irrigation infrastructure

Sudden recent floods have caused a massive destruction of irrigation infrastructure in the Faisalabad area, inflicting losses worth 650 million rupees.

The irrigation service rendered a summary to the Punjab government to request immediate release of catering funds, have confirmed sources.

In addition to damaging houses, livestock and livelihoods in hundreds of villages in Tandlianwala (Faisalabad) and Bhowana (Chiniot), the floods also swept away the structures of critical channels.

The damaged sections were quickly repaired by entrepreneurs registered on the directives of senior officials of the ministry.

An executive engineer of the Faisalabad irrigation area said that the restoration work on the floods already executed included the repair of the right guide Bund upstream damaged at the Qadirabad dam at a cost of 70 million rupees, the restoration of the violation section at the same dam with a value of RS30 The dam costs 80 million rupees and the construction of Pushta to cover the quality line hydraulic worth 10 million rupees.

Meanwhile, the office engineer’s office, Faisalabad Irrigation Zone, estimated that additional work of catering and prevention of floods worth 3.17 billion rupees are necessary before the next Mousson season.

The field surveys carried out by the ministry have identified urgent needs through divisions, notably Khanki, Qadirabad, Burala, Jhang and Khairwala.

The proposed works include the rehabilitation of violation sites, the strengthening of eroded banks, the construction of protective pushtas and bunds, repair of spurs and studs, the restoration of the main drains and the clearance of the bed of entrances along the Ravi and Chenab rivers. According to sources, if they are approved, these measures will considerably improve the preparation of floods and minimize the risks for life, property and irrigation infrastructure in the region.
