Huawei introduced a smart box Harmonyos in China, marking the first appearance of the operating system in commercial equipment.
The product was developed in partnership with Alipay and the Meiyijia convenience store, and is part of a joint initiative to accelerate digital retail solutions by combining resources in the payment, software and retail sectors.
The Caisse Régéuse merges the Huawei operating system and ecosystem technologies with Alipay’s payment infrastructure and the large national Meiyijia store network.
Big plans
The registry features support interaction, a feature developed by Alipay which allows customers to finish a payment simply by unlocking their phone and touching the terminal.
Alipay launched the TAP interaction in 2024, and functionality has since been used by more than 200 million buyers.
Beyond the simple rationalization of the payment process, the system will be able to automatically apply coupons and synchronize loyalty points, all without buyers needing to open an application.
The registers fed by Harmonyos will start to deploy in more than 40,000 Meiyijia stores on a national scale and companies plan to bring collaboration into other areas.
The integration of accounts, membership services, evolving models for intelligent retail operations, advertising, payment innovations and a range of digital store services are all under study.
The arrival of Harmonyos in retail equipment is another step in Huawei’s strategy to provide a national alternative to Android and Windows.
Originally unveiled in 2019 after seven years of development, Harmonyos, known as Hongmeng In China, Huawei’s response is cut off from Google’s Android ecosystem. It has since extended to tablets, portable devices, IoT devices, televisions and PCs.
Harmonyos is already used in a wide range of technologies, and its addition to commercial equipment takes it from consumer electronics to infrastructure for businesses.
