“New provinces necessary for future generations”

Islamabad:

Punjab colleges president Mian Amer Mahmood called for the creation of a new province at each level of division, arguing that smaller administrative units would ensure better results of governance and development.

Speaking during a seminar entitled Pakistan 2030: possibilities and new directions at rapid university, Mahmood asked why, despite heavy expenses, Punjab could not provide expected results in education and health care. He noted that the provincial government spends 4,400 rupees per student each month in public schools and nearly 6 million rupees per year on each hospital bed, but the results remain unsatisfactory.

“Modern research shows that the more the administrative units are small, the better the performance,” he said, adding that Pakistan continues to operate with administrative structures designed for the population of 1947. “If we want to secure the future of our generations, each division must be transformed into a province.”

He urged young people to channel their energy in this cause rather than “waste time on social networks”, saying that such a decision could unite all political parties. He stressed that universities should not only produce human resources but also focus on human development.
