Two children drown in a rainfall in Gulistan-e-Jauhar

Karachi:

Two minor boys drowned on Monday while he was bathed in a pit filled with rainwater outside a building under construction in the Karachi Gulistan-E-Jauhar region. A third child managed to escape unscathed.

The deceased was identified as Mureed Hussain, 10, son of Abdul Muneer, and 11 -year -old Haris, son of Abdul Ghaffar, both residents of Bhittaiabad. The deceased was transferred to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) by the EDHI ambulance for medico-legal formalities and later given to their families.

The boys played in accumulated rainwater, which had gathered in a pit unearthed some time ago by workers aimed at laying the bases of the site. The incident occurred near Bloc 9, Magsi Chowk, within the limits of the Malir Cantonment police station.

Malir Cantonment Sho Agha Abdul Rasheed said the three children bathed in the pit when the incident had taken place. Mureed’s brother Ghumlam Hussain managed to escape unscathed.

This is not the first time this year that a citizen has lost his life in an excavation pit. In May, an alleged negligence of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) won the life of a teenager on Dhoke Kala Khan Service Road, where a 17 -foot depth pit dug for a water tank had been left in the open for more than six months.

The victim, identified as Rehan Masih, 17, slipped and fell into the pit while playing near an adjacent cricket field on the site.

The trench, dug for a water tank to serve union councils 21, 22, 23 and 24, remains incomplete due to a lack of funds reported. According to the inhabitants, the pit measures approximately 17 to 19 feet deep, 30 feet in length and four feet wide. He accumulated with dirty rainwater and had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

On the day of the incident, Masih was aligned in a cricket match when he accidentally slipped into the pit. Due to his depth, he did not survive. Residents recovered the body with difficulties and sent it for the autopsy to the district university hospital. The deceased was given to the family after medical-legal formalities for the last rites.

Residents reported frequent minor incidents on the site and said they had already raised concerns. The fatal accident sparked a general indicator, the inhabitants of the staging of protests against wasa and asked for immediate action.
