The absence of Prince William and Kate Middleton of the historic final of the Women’s Women’s Rugby World Cup against Canada raised the eyebrows on Saturday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was one of the dignitaries present, traveling thousands of kilometers to support his national team.
On the other hand, William and Kate, both lovers of well -known sports, remained away.
William would have been in Scotland, while Kate stayed at home despite the post of boss of the Rugby Football Union since 2022.
Instead, the couple congratulated Instagram.
“Congratulations to @REDROSESSRUGBY, the new female champions of the Rugby World Cup!” They wrote, adding that Canada had an “exceptional tournament”.
Before the match, Kate had shared an encouraging message alongside a photo of her with the team.
Their absence, however, aroused rapid online criticisms. An X user wrote that the non-presentation “is in net relief against the presence of international figures”, adding that it highlighted “the selective approach to duty” of the Royals.
The backlash, noted certain observers, reflected the type of online control often confronted with Meghan Markle.
