“RS20b not enough”: the mayor tears the federal plan of Karachi

Karachi:

The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, criticized the federal government for announcing 20 billion rupees for Karachi, describing it as “pacifier” compared to the real need of the city of 200 billion rupees, saying that people sitting in Islamabad cannot solve Karachi’s problems. He made these comments while speaking to the media after inaugurating Imam Mehdi Park and Sports Ground in the New Rizvia Society.

This city requires coherent work at the local level, “he said, adding that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will spend 28 billion rupees for development this year, while another Rs 10 billion has been allocated to city level projects.

The mayor said that the 5.5 acres site, once a dumping ground, had been transformed into a modern recreational establishment with a walking track, a football and a cricket field, projectors and other amenities. “Where there were garbage, there is today greenery. Green spaces are an ongoing charitable organization, and this park is a gift for citizens,” he added.

Wahab said that large-scale projects were underway through the city under the vision of the President of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, including BRT on University Road, sewer improvements and drainage, and the completion of overflies and sub-bumps.

Rejecting opposition criticism, the mayor said: “Our press conferences are not based on allegations but on performance. We have delivered without crying for lack of powers.” He promised to continue to make the promises to make Karachi “a development and prosperity hub”.
