- The Fire TV Stick 4K Select has lower specifications, a support for uncertain streamer and not Dolby Vision HDR or Dolby Audio
- The Fire TV Stick 4K has the existing application of application and Dolby Vision – and is on sale at the moment
- The Fire TV Stick 4K Max adds Dolby Atmos and faster performance
Amazon unveiled the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, the first of its devices to ship with the Amazon Vega operating system. So far, it is also the only one: the other launches of new Fire TV all use the previous and familiar operating system.
The interface seems very similar, but when the previous operating system was based on the open source Android project (AOSP) with a makeover Amazon, the new software is a brand new flavor of Linux. It’s good for Amazon, because it gives the company a complete control over the entire system, and apparently makes it more effective. But is it good for you?
The short answer is: Ummm …
The price of the 4K selection list of $ 39.99 / £ 49.99 is cheaper than $ 49.99 / £ 59.99 of the 4K ordinary TV stick, although at the time of writing, you can get the more expensive model for $ 24.99 at Amazon US and for £ 25.99 at Amazon UK, which makes the upgrade model a much better.
You can even get the most premium 4K Max model $ 59.99 / £ 69.99 for only $ 39.99 on Amazon US or for £ 39.99 on Amazon UK today.
So, before even entering specifications, existing models are certainly the best option if you plan to buy right now. But if you want to know the differences listed between them, let’s enter them.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select vs Fire TV Stick 4K and Max: What is the difference?
The most important thing to know about the 4K selection of Fire TV Stick is that it presents itself under the existing 4K and 4K max models. Amazon describes it as the best for “Essential 4K streaming”, the existing 4K model delivering “Streaming Cinematic 4K” and “Powerful 4K streaming” 4k max.
The first and I think that the most important difference is that the new Select a 4K with HDR10 +, but it is missing both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It can however pass audio encoded Dolby via its HDMI port so that your TV or your sound bar is unchecking, if they support it.
The Fire TV Stick 4K supports Dolby Vision HDR, but not for Dolby Atmos. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max adds the management of Dolby Atmos in addition to everything else.
The second big difference is that you can only execute applications designed to run on the Vega operating system, and at launch, there will be applications that will not be available. However, key streamers are there: Amazon highlighted Prime Video, Disney +, Netflix, YouTube, HBO Max, Tubi, Pluto TV, Starz, Paramount + and Peacock. It also shows Apple TV + support in its promotional images.
The Amazon Luna and Xbox Cloud Gaming services are promised to be a medium in the future, but perhaps not at launch.
And although this does not affect all users, the new Select does not support farming: for applications, it is the Amazon or highway path. And this can be relevant to you if one of the applications you plan has not yet been redone for Vega: you cannot bring the Android version.
The Select 4K does not have the image function in the other two 4K models, and when Alexa + gets there, we do not know when – it is listed as “coming soon”.
Wi-Fi is also different. The Select a Wi-Fi 5, while 4K A Wi-Fi 6 and 4K max at Wi-Fi 6th.
There is also less RAM: 1 GB in the selection for the 2 GB of the 4K stick. However, we cannot make a similar comparison, because it is a different operating system and Amazon may well have optimized it to provide the same speed with a more modest memory.
I think that if I buy a Fire TV stick at the moment, I would go for the 4K max with its maximum set of functionalities, and the ability to relaunch (and future versions may not have this).
The Fire TV Stick 4K Select – and the 4K and 4K max existing – are now on sale from Amazon. The Select will be shipped from October 15, 2025, but is available for order now.
