New research has said that fewer and fewer companies were recovering their data after paying ransom requests, making it even more expensive in terms of recovery.
The Veeam survey found only one (32%) which paid recovered their data in 2024, against more than half (54%) in 2023. On the other hand, the number of organizations recovering their data without paying more than doubled (14%to 30%) in the same period.
However, the impact of ransomware attacks is amplified by increased volume, and the fact that the British government plans to prohibit ransom payments by the public sector and critical organizations of national infrastructure.
Ransomware recovery is not guaranteed
VEEAM claims that almost two thirds (63%) are unable to recover from a site on the site level because they lack alterative infrastructure options. Breakdowns, which can last for weeks, can cost up to 1 million sterling pounds per hour of stopping time, says the company.
In 2025, we have already seen a number of high-level attacks in the United Kingdom. M&S attacks and cooperatives earlier this year could cost up to 440 million pounds sterling, and a more recent attack on Jaguar Land Rover could cost 50 million pounds sterling per week.
The report also covers a change in tactics, many now bypassing encryption and opting for data flight and extortion. Others simply want to cause disturbances, without necessarily focusing on the financial gain.
Veeam Emea GM and SVP Tim Pfaelzer explained that “attackers remain an unworthy method of data recovery”, so the overall ransomware payments dropped by 22% between 2023 and 2024.
