- OLED panel costs have dropped almost half in five years
- Prices should drop more in 2026
- The savings are probably quite modest
Whether LCD, OLED or RGB, each new type of television technology is starting their life with absolutely attractive prices. The good news is that these prices are falling over time, and for OLED televisions, they drop considerably in the past five years – and they will continue to decrease in the coming year.
According to the industry sources reported by Flatpanelleshd, the cost of a 65 -inch OLED panel of the LG display was $ 1,000 in 2020. This fell to $ 600 in 2024, and should drop below $ 500 before the end of 2025. Additional discounts are expected in 2026.
And of course, it’s not just 65 -inch OLED panels; These are panels of all sizes, including larger ones, with a 77 -inch cost and 83 -inch panels lowering significantly in the past year.
This is the good news. The bad news is that very big savings will probably not be transmitted to us. Or at least, not everyone will do because display companies must recover their initial and continuous investments in people, production lines and premises.
Why OLED televisions become cheaper to manufacture
Moving to a new type of television panel is not cheap. Manufacturers must invest in new machines, and often in new whole factories to put these machines. They need to train their people and they must improve production efficiency to provide higher yields and lower waste. In short, they must spend a ton of money in advance.
Over time, this money is starting to be reimbursed. As the Korean newspaper Biz Chosun explains, for LG display, line extensions and improvement of yields are an effort “which began to bear fruit last year”, which achieved a 30% reduction in production costs. “Next year, the company is targeting additional cost reductions thanks to a design innovation that changes the structure of the display pilot,” said the report.
Biz Chosun also claims that the drop in production costs could trigger the existential threat of RGB, the so-called killer Oled, Col. “The cost of LED chips that make up the RVB LED backlight represents most of the unit price of the panel,” said its industry source. “When you include the costs of backlight and driver, it is actually estimated at $ 400 to $ 600, similar to the production costs of OLED panels, and it could even be more expensive.”
