The first super moon of 2025 illuminated the night sky of Pakistan, attracting astronomy enthusiasts to popular observation places to assist and photograph the celestial spectacle.
The event occurred on Tuesday around 7 p.m. Pakistan time, shortly after the Pakistani Commission for Research on Espace and the High Atmosphere (Suparco) published a clarification on international media reports suggesting that the Super Moon had appeared earlier.
An official of Suparco explained that a temporal overlap had made the moon brighter in the previous night. “The event of October 6, called PĂ©rige, was the closest approach to the moon compared to the earth, which can also be defined as a super moon,” said the official.
The perigee took place at 7:00 p.m., a coordinated universal time on October 6 – which is equivalent to 0:00 PST on October 7. The manager added that the full moon phase occurred at 8:47 pm PST, and as the two events occurred a few hours apart, “this is qualified as a super moon”.
A super moon appears up to 14 % larger and almost 30 % brighter than a typical full moon. Earlier, Suparco had declared that the moon would be at a distance of 224,599 miles of the earth, which would make it approximately 6.6 % larger and 13 % brighter than the average.
However, the most brilliant super moon of the year is expected on November 5, when the moon is only 221,817 miles of the earth. The phenomenon will be visible around the world, including in Pakistan, offering a “breathtaking” view to the observers of the sky.
