Cardinals coach draws attention from NFLPA after appearing to punch player

Arizona Cardinals Head coach Jonathan Gannon drew attention from the NFLPA after he appeared to punch running back Emari DeMERMADO following his costly fumble in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans, according to a report.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) told PK Press Club Digital on Tuesday that it is looking into the viral sideline ship between Gannon and Demerctado that took place during the fourth quarter after DemerCado dropped the ball before reaching the goal line for what would have been a 76-yard touchdown. The NFLPA added that it has not launched a formal investigation into Gannon.

The score would have given Arizona a 21-point lead late in the game, but instead the ball bounced out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a touchdown and a turnover. The Titans Rallied from behind to win the match 22-21.

Videos on social media showed a tense interaction between Gannon and Demermerado. Gannon appeared to punch DeMermercado in the midsection, although he was not fully visible in the exchange captured on the broadcast.

Gannon addressed the situation Monday, saying he “didn’t feel well” the day after.

“So at the team meeting, I approached myself, I apologized to Emari, I apologized to the team. I just told them that I was letting the moment of what happened get the better of me.”

Sunday’s loss marked the Cardinals’ third straight defeat.

“I try to be emotionally stable and calm because my job is to solve problems during the game,” Gannon continued. “That’s not really who I am, who I want to be, and I told the guys that today. So it’s a mistake on my part.”
