- Only half will upgrade the operating system or the device, a quarter refuses to go from Windows 10
- British customers can get the one -year free ESU, but it will not be automatic
- Consumers can also obtain aid to reduce electronic waste when upgrading
With the end of life of Windows 10 to come next week, new research has revealed exactly how many people are planning to upgrade, and that does not seem good for Microsoft.
Which one study?
With 21 million people who still use a Windows 10 device, this means that 5.4 million Windows 10 devices could still be used after the deadline of October 14, 2025, putting users at risk of attack.
Windows 10 is not going at all at all
With 26%planning to continue using Windows 10, a little more than half will upgrade the operating system of its existing device (39%) or will upgrade all its device to support Windows 11 (14%). Six percent even declared that they would convert to another operating system following the expected depreciation.
Which? Note Microsoft offers a free free year on Windows 10 security (ESU) from Windows 10 to British and European customers, although the company has recently been criticized for not having offered the extension in other markets worldwide (notably the United States).
Even so, the ESU of the free year will not occur automatically. Instead, users must oppose their Windows on OneDrive settings.
Which? The editor -in -chief Lisa Barber summed up: “If you do not act, you could become more vulnerable to pirates and scams.”
The report also pointed out that British retailers must help consumers securely and responsiblely eliminate former aircraft when upgrading, as part of the electronic and electronic equipment directive, but this can reduce electronic waste via recycling diets, this is not always translated into financial savings and incentives.
With the exception of a small Blip in August, the market share of Windows 10 has dropped regularly since the launch of Windows 11, but it was not until July 2025 that the new operating system exceeded its predecessor (via Statcounter).
