Bill Belichick’s time in North Carolina may already be coming to an end.
UNC reportedly had “potential exit strategy discussions” on Tuesday, according to 247 Sports. This comes as Belichick’s Tar Heels are 2-3 through their first five games of his inaugural season as a college head coach.
North Carolina has reportedly had “preliminary conversations” about firing Belichick, which would represent a whopping $20 million buyout under his contract. However, 247 Sports points out that an alleged rules violation could help the program eliminate or reduce the buyout.

While the university discusses, Belichick is also reportedly considering it.
Belichick has “discussed buyout options with the North Carolina hierarchy,” where he has “signaled his willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in the media,” according to college football reporter Ollie Connolly.
HULU PULLS THE BRANCH ON BILL BELICHICK DOCUMENTARY PROJECT AMID 2-3 DEBUT AT UNC: REPORTS
These rumors come as UNC is in the midst of its bye week, and it’s certainly not how Belichick or anyone envisioned his jump into college football after his illustrious NFL coaching career.
But while the product on the field hasn’t been great, there has also been some drama. Cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was suspended for allegedly granting extra benefits to players, including sideline passes for their family members.
A lawsuit was also filed in North Carolina alleging the university’s board of trustees illegally hired Belichick.

And now things have gotten so bad for the Tar Heels that the Hulu docuseries that was supposed to follow Belichick through his college football journey has reportedly been scrapped due to a poor start. The project was only announced in August, but it was pulled.
Belichick’s last loss was a blowout defeat at the hands of Clemson at home, 38-10, where the Tigers scored 28 points in the first quarter and cruised to victory from there. They owned a 35-3 lead at halftime, which ultimately led to Dabo Swinney pulling a few starters down the stretch.
With a reported malfunction in Belichick’s program, there’s also his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, whose presence was criticized before he even made his debut in a 48-10 blowout loss to TCU.
Hudson was regularly seen on the sidelines before games, speaking to Belichick and even ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips last week.

For now, Belichick will use the bye week to prepare for the Tar Heels’ next game against the California Golden Bears on October 17. But perhaps his days as a leader in Chapel Hill could be coming to an end.
