Surfshark has just unveiled a major upgrade to its network: the world’s first 100 Gbps VPN servers.
These new servers mark a huge step forward from the current industry standard of 10 Gbps. This means that Surfshark’s servers could handle much more data at once, eliminating bottlenecks during peak times. Even if many people are using the VPN at the same time, you should experience a smoother connection.

It’s hard to disagree, as the industry standard is 10Gbps, which means the upgrade should offer much more data capacity than today’s fastest VPNs. It is important to note that this refers to the total bandwidth capacity of each server and not the speed of individual users.
According to Surfshark, the new infrastructure is designed to support much heavier loads without slowing down. In practice, this means faster and more consistent connections, even during peak hours, when VPN networks are typically under pressure.
Surfshark says it is preparing for the future. As more users need fast connections for things like 4K streaming, gaming, virtual reality, and remote working, server bandwidth must increase to meet these needs.

“All users connected to the server have much more legroom and experience better speed,” said Karolis Kačiulis, Senior Systems Engineer at Surfshark. Kačiulis also emphasized that Surfshark wants to promote innovation across the industry, pushing competitors to move from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.
Kačiulis believes that 100Gbps VPN servers will one day become the norm, and Surfshark wanted to be the first VPN service to offer this upgrade.
To begin with, the deployment is limited to a few servers in Amsterdam, but Surfshark says it is considering potential future deployments in other locations around the world.
Surfshark paves the way for other VPN providers
The claims made in Surfshark’s announcement are verified: it is truly an industry first. Undoubtedly, some of its competitors will want to follow suit, although it is difficult to predict when this will happen. Surfshark also doesn’t say how long this limited rollout will last or when we’ll see 100Gbps servers outside of the Netherlands.
Most VPNs today advertise server speeds of 10 Gbps, a standard that has only become common in recent years. Surfshark itself only upgraded to 10Gbps across its entire fleet at the end of 2024.
Providers like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN have moved from 1Gbps to 10Gbps connections to reduce congestion and improve reliability, but Surfshark is the first to go beyond.
