- China accuses the United States of cyberespionage
- China’s National Time Service Center hacked due to security breaches in employees’ phones
- The two states have been pointing fingers at each other for years over various cyber incidents.
China accuses the United States of infiltrating its National Time Service Center, exploiting vulnerabilities in employees’ phones to steal login credentials, hack computers and exfiltrate information.
China says it has “irrefutable evidence” that the US National Security Agency (NSA) accessed stolen credentials and used them to hack the center’s network systems as early as 2022.
China warns that these serious incidents could have disrupted financial systems, power supplies, communications networks and international standard time.
Protective measures
The National Time Center is a research institute responsible for generating and distributing official standard time and providing precise timing for the communications, finance, energy, transportation and defense industries, any disruption of which could have serious consequences on citizens’ daily lives.
It is not yet clear what “irrefutable evidence” China claims to have, or what exact information was stolen in the attack – but national security authorities said their investigations revealed that private servers around the world were used to conceal the source of the attacks.
The two countries have long accused each other of cyber intrusions, with the NSA recently coming under fire specifically over allegations that it attacked Chinese critical infrastructure such as communications, transportation and energy services.
Describe the extent of the cat and mouse game between the two States; In August 2025, the NSA warned that Chinese technology companies may have ties to the Salt Typhoon cyberespionage group, which targeted hundreds of companies, lingering on networks and exfiltrating information.
Mr. Lui Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy, said TechRadar Pro, “Cyberattacks pose a common threat to all countries, including China. China firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyberattacks and cybercrime, a consistent and clear position. At the same time, we also firmly oppose defaming others without solid evidence.”
