Aaron Glenn returned to the New York Jets, the franchise where he began his playing career, for his first head coaching opportunity in the NFL.
Jets owner Woody Johnson continues to support first-year coach Aaron Glenn despite the team’s 0-7 start. However, Johnson’s confidence doesn’t appear to extend to quarterback Justin Fields.
“It seems [Glenn] ” Johnson said Tuesday at the NFL’s fall owners’ meeting.

Glenn decided to bench Fields in favor of veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor at halftime of the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. It remains unclear whether Fields or Taylor will be the focus of the Jets’ first offensive series in the team’s Week 8 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Johnson then expressed disappointment with a particular statistical rating attached to Fields.
“It’s tough when you have a quarterback with the grade that we have. He has the ability, but something isn’t right. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’ll see similar results across the league. You have to play consistent at that position and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the rest of the season.”

Fields started six games for the Jets, missing Week 3 due to concussion protocol. He compiled a passer rating of 91.1 this season. Although Johnson hinted at optimism, he quickly acknowledged that “you can’t win with hope,” before noting, “but it helps.”
Johnson has committed to letting the coaching staff make decisions at the quarterback position. He also said Glenn “will make the right decision with what we have.”

Johnson’s relationship with Glenn dates back nearly three decades. The billionaire businessman has redoubled his confidence in the Jets head coach.
“I believe in Aaron,” Johnson said. “I see the way he runs the room. If I was a player, I would respond to him because he’s the real deal. There’s no BS, there’s no second agenda. What you hear is the truth. A lot of times players don’t understand the truth. They get a lot of gibberish.”
The 2025 NFL trade deadline is scheduled for November 4. The Jets could be one of the teams looking to acquire or move players as the deadline approaches. Johnson said the front office would explore all options.
“I think we’re looking at all options at all times,” Johnson said. “I’m always looking for what’s happening in football.”
