- Smart Bed Owners Hit by This Week’s Big AWS Outage
- Eight Sleep Pod owners reported overheating and vertical locking
- Eight Sleep tells customers it ‘protects your Pod experience from outages’
This week’s massive AWS outage had a number of bizarre ripple effects, but the most unexpected might be one that hit owners of some smart beds.
As many unfortunate Eight Sleep Pod owners have reported, Amazon Web Services issues — which have affected more than 1,000 businesses — have left their smart beds overheating and even stuck in an upright position.
One owner (below) commented that “it would be great if my bed wasn’t stuck in a tilted position due to an AWS outage.” Meanwhile, another viral post from early adopter Alex Browne (as reported by Dexerto) stated that a “backend outage means I’m sleeping in a sauna.”
The root of the problem was that the company’s “Pod,” which you can buy as a mattress or double bed with a box spring, is connected to the internet so it can track your biometrics and control the temperature of the mattress. Unfortunately, many owners have found this feature to be a double-edged sword during a major internet outage.
Fortunately, Eight Sleep moved quickly to ensure its smart bed customers didn’t have their sleep disrupted for too long.
The company’s CEO, Matteo Franceschetti, said on
The dark side of the smart home
We’ve previously enjoyed Eight Sleep products like its Pod 3 cover, which our review called “an excellent sleep aid with brilliant smart features for heating and cooling.”
But while there are some benefits to having your bed with sleep tracking and heating features, this AWS outage showed that this smart home connectivity isn’t without its drawbacks.
Let’s be honest, for those of us with non-smart beds, hearing that an internet outage left someone’s bed stuck upright is pretty hilarious. While the AWS outage proves stressful for many, a little thrill of schadenfreude brings some welcome light relief.
The good news is that Eight Sleep is now repairing its smart mattresses and beds to make them resistant to failures in the future – and for now, it looks like the AWS nightmare is over for most of us too.
