ECP grants one month to Punjab

ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday officially granted the Punjab government four weeks to finalize new demarcations for the upcoming local body elections.

In an official letter to the Punjab chief secretary, the ECP secretary confirmed that the extension was approved following a request from the provincial government.

The letter also warned that if the task was not completed within the stipulated time, the matter would be taken up directly by the commission. The matter will be brought before the commission after four weeks.

The ECP said the directive stems from the recent passage of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2025, which legally mandates the redrawing of constituency boundaries before elections are held.

The delimitation is now legally mandatory under the recently approved Punjab Local Government Act, 2025.

The delimitation schedule published on October 9 is now officially withdrawn.
