- Lanterns might not debut on HBO Max in early 2026
- James Gunn has claimed that this will be the first DCU project to launch next year.
- A new rumor suggests it will arrive after Supergirlwhich will be released in theaters next June
Prepare for some potentially bad news, DC fans, because Lanterns might not debut on HBO Max in early 2026.
According to a new rumor, the next DC Universe (DCU) Green Lantern TV show is set to arrive after Supergirl flies into theaters. The latter being scheduled for a worldwide release on June 26, 2026, it is possible that Lanterns will not see the light of day until July 2026 at the earliest.
To explain why this might be the case, we have to go back to the beginning of October. In one of its most recent Heat Vision newsletters, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) suggested that the film formerly known as Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow will be the next DCU project to make its bow.
This wouldn’t be a problem if DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran hadn’t already indicated that Lanterns would premiere early next year. Indeed, speaking to the press in February (as Variety reported), the two said they expected a decline in the first three months of 2026.
Naturally, THR’s report raised eyebrows among Green Lantern fans. Had the specialist magazine simply forgotten LanternsOr was something more sinister afoot?
Step forward the Green Lantern Podcast (GLP), a YouTube fan channel that decided to investigate. Seeking to clarify what THR had heard, GLP exchanged emails with the outlet, and in its October 28, 2025 episode, GLP revealed what those email correspondences said. In brief: THR has confirmed that it has heard that Lanterns would be launched after Supergirl.
So it looks like it will be a long wait for the next DCU Chapter One project to debut. Indeed, with Peacemaker season 2 ends in mid-October and no other DC Studios films or TV shows are expected to roll off the production lines until Supergirlit will be another eight months before the Warner Bros comic book universe has something new to offer us.
For what it’s worth, I reached out to HBO Max for clarification on Lanterns‘ output window. At the time of publishing, I have not received a response, but I will update this article if one is sent to me.
In the meantime, we’ve gradually learned more about the DCU’s Green Lantern TV series. Recently, one of its showrunners opened up about the “push and pull” that will exist between its two protagonists. The individuals in question? The iconic Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who will be played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre respectively.
