Keira Knightley feels “lucky” to have survived her first experiences of fame.

The 40-year-old actress has enjoyed a very successful career in the film industry, having starred in Bend it like Beckham in 2002 – but Keira acknowledges that her life and career could easily have taken a different direction.

Talk to The IndependentKeira explained: “As an adult I am very aware that people can go through very difficult times in their lives and they don’t come out of them with a very successful career and a very healthy bank balance. I feel incredibly lucky.”

“I think as a 40-year-old woman, people react differently to you than when you’re 18. That’s the way the world is,” she said.

Keira added: “When you’re 18 you don’t have a lot of work, you’re all image. When you have a career that lasts 25 years and you have enough going on to say, ‘Well, it’s quite a job, some of it worked, some of it didn’t’ – people can look and say, ‘That’s a career.'”
