Both runners separated from the peloton as they approached the 24th mile of the event. Mutiso, also from Kenya, turned on the jets in the final 50 meters of the race but fell just before Kipruto.

Kipruto finished with a time of 2:08.09 to win the race. It was the first time he won the New York marathon.

The Olympic bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Games took first place in the Tokyo 2024, Chicago 2022 and Boston 2021 marathons. His time at this year’s New York Marathon dropped about six seconds from his personal best of 2:02.16.
