PSG and Bayern Munich are the top scorers in the Champions League this season. There is little surprise about this. What may raise your eyebrows, however, is PSG’s terrible recent record against the German heavyweights. It’s not just that they have lost four competitive matches in a row against the Bavarian team, but they have failed to score in any of them.
As scary as Vincent Kompany’s men are right now, the caveat is that the Bundesliga hasn’t been this weak in a long time. Between them, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen offered at least some semblance of domestic competition, but not last season, and not this season either.
Although it doesn’t seem to have hurt them yet, until Enrique arrived, PSG were living proof that it was only a matter of time. The Spaniard discovered the cure to Ligue 1 boredom last season, and it still seems to be working, as illustrated by his 2-1 win over Barcelona last month.
What remains fascinating in PSG’s approach is the collective. Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Goncalo Ramos and Nuno Mendes are their top UCL scorers this season with two each. Ousmane Dembélé hasn’t taken off yet, and it hasn’t hurt them at all – until now.
