Co-founder of Rockstar and Red Dead Redemption 2 Writer Dan Houser believes a third game will eventually be made, but admitted he would be sad not to be involved in its development.
Speaking in a recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Houser, who also has writing credits on almost every Grand Theft Auto game, shared his thoughts on not being part of the highly anticipated GTA6 and all potential Red Dead Redemption following having left the company.
The developer agreed that it would be bittersweet, but he’s also happy to do other things at his own studio, Absurd Ventures.
“Of course, giving up on something that I’ve been working on in one way or another for about 20 odd years, and writing on it for the last 10 or 11 that have come out, writing them all, or you know, the lead author on all of them, whatever it is… giving up on that is a big change. And sad in a way,” Houser said.
Speaking more about Red Dead RedemptionHouser explained that since his work on the first two titles was a “cohesive two-story arc”, he would be sad not to be involved in the sequel if a third game was in the works.
Look on it
Either way, Houser thinks Rockstar will Red Dead Redemption 3 A day.
“Because each of [Grand Theft Auto] the games were sort of a standalone story, it’s not quite the same because I think it would probably be sadder in some ways if someone continued Dead redbecause it was a cohesive two-game arc. Maybe it’s sadder to hear someone working on this. But then again, that will probably happen too.
“I don’t own the intellectual property. That was part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on things, but you don’t necessarily own them.”
Rockstar has not shared any plans for a third Dead red game, but we know he is currently focused on Grand Theft Auto 6which will launch on May 26, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
In the same interview, Houser explained why there is so much hype around Grand Theft Auto 6arguing that this is due to the way Rockstar has handled the evolution of intellectual property.
