- The first big Lego Star Trek set
- It’s 3,600 pieces
- A full cast of characters and a few surprises
Fans of the nearly 60-year-old franchise have waited decades for this: a set of Lego icons based on part of the iconic sci-fi series, and now we have it, a 3,600-piece, 10.5-inch high by 23.5-inch long by 18.5-inch wide, buildable representation of Star Trek: The Next Generation. USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D starship, an icon of the long-running series and films that followed.
The Enterprise’s arrival comes just months after Lego and franchise owner Paramount finally joined forces to begin delivering what is sure to be a series of incredible Star Trek-based kits. Before that, block-based buildable kits for the sci-fi franchise were primarily handled by companies like Mega Blocks. They were good, but never captured the cachet, design expertise or boldness of a Lego kit.
Within the confines of largely square, rectangular and triangular construction pieces, the Lego Icons USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D is a striking replica of the ship Star Trek: The Next Generationthe series that arguably revived the franchise for a new generation in 1987. The ship features a removable command saucer, nacelles with all the appropriate colors and details, and a secondary hull. The shuttle bay opens to reveal two mini shuttles.
Once the build is complete, you will have all the key characters in Lego form. Of course, this includes Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Riker, Lieutenant Worf, Lieutenant Commander Data, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Counselor Deanna Troi, Bartender Guinan, and Wesley Crusher. They’ll even carry their own accessories, including phasers, tricorders, and an engineering case.
The set is designed for adults aged 18 and over and naturally includes a display stand. It will ship on November 28 and will cost $399.99. / £349.99 / €379.99.
Lego is planning a splashy Black Friday launch video that will include an appearance by number one and frequent Star Trek director Jonathan Frakes, who has signed a USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D set, which one lucky viewer or fan will have a chance to win.
Lego adds a few more dilithium crystals to the set, giving anyone who commands the ship between November 28 and December 1 a free Lego Icons Star Trek: Type-15 Shuttlepod.
This module is a real Lego set on its own, with 261 pieces, opening hinged doors and a rear hatch. Better yet, it will include a mini figurine of Ensign Ro Laren, a character who featured prominently in some memorable episodes of the TNG series and who even returned in season 3 of Picard.
For Star Trek fans, it’s like the start of a new mission (maybe five years, depending on how long it takes you to build the Enterprise). There will be this model and other models, maybe even one of the original models from the 1960s Enterprise series and all of its characters. There could be models for the space station from Deep Space 9 or the sleek Enterprise from the early Enterprise series. Maybe vehicles from JJ Abrams films? The galaxy is the limit.
Who knows where Lego will boldly go next? Anyway, sign us up, Captain, we’re ready to engage.
