- Nvidia’s RTX 5000 Super Refresh Rumors Canned
- New speculation claims that GPUs were abandoned due to low VRAM supply levels.
- The 3GB GDDR7 modules required for Super GPUs are best used in AI graphics cards, we’re told
Nvidia may have canceled its RTX 5000 Super refresh based on the latest news – although we should keep in mind that these supercharged graphics cards were just speculation in the first place.
VideoCardz noticed that Chinese hardware site Uniko posted on
[rumor]Due to the recent shortage, the 3GB Gddr7 cannot come to the mainstream desktop market, so the super series is canceled. And current models are expected to be more expensive very soon, due to the increasing cost of 2GB Gddr7. pic.twitter.com/yMSMj1MjqJNovember 7, 2025
The RTX 5080 Super, RTX 5070 Ti Super and RTX 5070 Super were to massively increase the video RAM by 50%, increasing the load to 24 GB for the high-end offering and 18 GB for both 5070 versions.
And according to Uniko’s Hardware, Nvidia’s problem is that the 3GB GDDR7 memory modules needed for these refreshes are thin on the ground. So, the theory is that available VRAM of the 3GB variety will be used for Nvidia’s most expensive – and most cost-effective – AI graphics cards, and there simply isn’t room for the production of new GeForce RTX Super models.
On top of that, we’re told that 2GB GDDR7 VRAM modules are also getting more expensive, so the Blackwell line (which currently uses 2GB modules) could become more expensive in the future.
Analysis: AI > GeForce?
Unfortunately, this makes sense. In case you missed it, there’s been a lot of noise about the recent rise in memory prices and discussions of various supply chain swings (thus affecting drives as well as RAM). I’m not sure if current Nvidia GeForce graphics cards are getting more expensive, but the theories discussed around the potential for Super Refresh seem plausible.
If 3GB modules aren’t easy to find as suggested, Nvidia will still prioritize graphics cards like its RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell workstation GPUs, a hefty card that costs north of $8,000 in the US (with 96GB of GDDR7, or 32 modules) – with a much bigger profit margin, of course.
Still, it’s just a rumor, so it may be inaccurate – and maybe Nvidia still has plans for a Super refresh, they’ve just been pushed back. This has already happened, in theory, with the most recent launch window rumors suggesting these RTX 5000 Super graphics cards would only arrive between March and May 2026 – when previous buzz hinted at an early 2026 debut (past rumors even hinted at earlier than that, even).
So another possibility is that these Super GPUs may still be somewhere on the roadmap, but won’t arrive until much later next year. Any refresh may depend on the extent to which Nvidia feels it needs to compete with AMD – and there’s no particularly pressing need for that in the current GPU market.
The truth is that we simply don’t know, but when a rumor like this emerges, we of course have to take it into consideration – especially because, as noted, it makes sense that Nvidia could shift its priorities in this way. if there is a problem ensuring sufficient supply of 3GB VRAM modules. What we will have to see though is other rumor mongers backing up this claim to be sure it could be genuine.
It’s also worth remembering that if this happens, it will cast Black Friday in a rather different light. So far, I’ve advised those looking for a mid-range Nvidia GPU to wait for the RTX 5070 Super; but if that refresh doesn’t happen, the current deals you can get on the RTX 5070 – like this MSI model at Newegg US for $480 (with a $20 discount) – suddenly seem a lot more tempting, especially if the second part of this rumor about rising costs of 2GB memory modules driving up the asking price of current Blackwell GeForce models turns out to be on the money.
As always, we’re keeping a close eye on all the best Black Friday deals, which are already live.
