Sydney Sweeney Blames ‘Articles’ for Offensive ‘Perception’ of Jeans Ads

Sydney Sweeney once again dodges responsibility for “genes” advert

Sydney Sweeney was asked again about that American Eagle ad about “good genes” and she avoided taking any responsibility for it.

Sweeney received immense backlash for the ad earlier this year because the ad featured a pun about “good jeans” and “good genes.” People thought it was racist and glorified having blue eyes and being white, others thought it catered to the male gaze and was too sexual.

THE Euphoria The star didn’t address the backlash at the time, and she’s avoiding questions about it in the present.

In a new interview with The Guardian To promote her new film Christy, she argued that she has no control over how people interpret her actions.

“I think what’s interesting is that I’m still myself. I’m still just me. But it’s what other people do to me that’s uncontrollable,” she said.

“Like you’re going to write this article… Then people will read it and have their own perception. So I try to be as much of myself as possible, but it’s always through other people’s perspectives,” the Echo Valley star added.

In a previous interview with GQ, she noted that she was unaware of the backlash the publicity received since she was filming the new season of Euphoria at the time.

“It was surreal…it’s not that I didn’t have that feeling, but I didn’t think about it like that. Or any of that. I kind of put my phone away,” she told the magazine.

“I was filming every day. I’m filming Euphoria, so I’m working 16 hours a day and I don’t really bring my phone to set, so I’m working and then I go home and fall asleep. So I haven’t really seen much,” she added.

Sydney’s new film Christie follows the personal and professional life of boxer Christy Martin. The film joined the top 12 worst openings ever for a film released on more than 2,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo. The film grossed a dismal $1.3 million this weekend.
