PTI senator resigns after voting for 27th amendment

“I voted because of the marshal and I came to vote today because of General Asim Munir”

ISLAMABAD:

PTI Senator Saifullah Abro on Monday announced his resignation after voting in favor of the 27th constitutional amendment, in violation of his party’s policy.

Listing the reasons for voting in favor of the amendment which also seeks immunity for Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Abro, speaking in the Senate, said India was facing global humiliation due to the role of the Pakistan Army in the India-Pakistan standoff in May this year.

“No one has ever shown so much respect [US] President [Donald] Trump showed it to the marshal. I voted because of the field marshal, and I came to vote today because of General Asim Munir,” he said.

Abro said that when the 26th constitutional amendment was passed in October last year, ten members of his family were kidnapped. “What did my party do to raise its voice in my favor after that? he asked. He then announced that he was resigning his Senate seat.

Hearing his announcement, Senate President Yousaf Raza Gillani said: “Senator Saifullah Abro has resigned, but we will make you senator again. »

Earlier, following Abro’s vote against the party’s policy on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the PTI decided to initiate action against him under Article 63-A of the Constitution.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar said Saifullah Abro was now disqualified.

“We will file an appeal against him with the Election Commission [of Pakistan]. As House Leader, I asked all senators not to vote. Saifullah Abro violated party discipline and voted in favor of the government,” he added.
