- The PS5 is now less than 2 million units behind the PS4 in sales, which currently stands at 86 million units sold lifetime.
As the PlayStation 5 celebrates its fifth anniversary, Sony announced that the console has now sold 84.2 million units.
In Sony’s latest financial results for the first half of its fiscal year, the company reported that its Game & Network Services division saw a significant increase in revenue.
It says the PS5 sold 3.9 million units in its most recent quarter ending September 30, 2025, which would bring the console’s total sales to 84.2 million.
Sony said the PS5 has sold 80.3 million units since its November 2020 launch in its latest report, and with the updated numbers, the current-gen console is now close to the PS4’s lifetime sales of 86 million.
Monthly active users of PlayStation Plus also increased from 116 million users to 119 million users, and 80.3 million pieces of software were sold on PS5 and PS4 in the second quarter of 2025, an increase from the 77.7 million reported in the same period last year.
6.3 million of these software include first-party titles on both consoles, which would count titles like Yotei’s Ghostwhich Sony confirmed sold 3.3 million copies in its first month.
As the holiday season approaches, PlayStation hardware and software sales are sure to see renewed momentum, meaning the PS5 has the potential to surpass the PS4’s lifetime sales in the coming weeks.
