Senator Abro’s resignation suspended

.

ISLAMABAD:

Action on the resignation of dissident PTI senator Saifullah Abro was halted amid the ongoing debate on the 27th constitutional amendment as the Senate President is yet to sign the resignation submitted by the lawmaker.

Although Abro’s resignation was presented to Parliament, the Senate Secretariat did not initiate formal proceedings and the President refrained from verifying or forwarding the matter for further action.

Accordingly, no reference under Section 63-A, which deals with disqualification on the ground of defection, was also sent.

Senator Abro, who had defected from the PTI after voting in favor of the 27th constitutional amendment, had tendered his resignation in the upper house earlier.

However, with the president’s approval pending, the resignation remains legally incomplete, leaving his parliamentary status in limbo as the government advances the 27th Amendment Bill.

The PTI also decided to expel the lawmaker for defying party policy. The party also distanced itself from Senator Abro, who was excluded from all communication channels, including the parliamentary party’s WhatsApp group. The party also decided to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to immediately end his tenure as senator.
