The 27th constitutional amendment contested

LAHORE:

The 27th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2025 was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) for allegedly undermining judicial independence and changing the constitutional framework without proper consultation.

The petition was filed, naming the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Justice as respondents.

The petitioner argued that the amendment contradicted the preamble of the Constitution, saying it sought to curtail the powers of the Supreme Court and thereby weakened the independence of the judiciary.

According to the petition, the amendment’s provisions threaten the system of checks and balances provided by the Constitution.
