- Users can’t access X.com due to botched authentication failover
- Endless redirects are reported
- Migrating from twitter.com to x.com causes problems
Many X (formerly Twitter) users are reporting being locked out of their accounts due to a botched authentication switchover.
The issue concerns the removal of the old twitter.com domain in favor of Elon Musk’s apparent sentimental attachment to x.com.
Users who rely on passwords and hardware security keys are sent into an endless loop of re-enrolling their chosen form of two-factor authentication.
Connecting has never been so difficult
The move from twitter.com to x.com began in May 2024, with X warning users that if they do not manually migrate their password or hardware security key authentication by November 10, they will be locked out of their account until they migrate or choose another form of authentication (such as authentication appwhich was not affected by the migration).
And there you have it, November 10 has passed and users are forced to migrate their authentication method. Unfortunately for them, many users receive error messages during migration or are caught in a perpetual loop of redirects.
Access keys and hardware security keys are supposed to be a quick and secure way to ensure that the person logging into your account is really you, but currently for X users, this is not the case.
Outage tracking site Downdetector still shows some users having trouble logging in three days after the deadline, and X has not released an official comment on the matter.
This isn’t the first time X has been subjected to a botched security change. In 2023, Twitter’s Tor onion service that allowed users in areas with restricted or censored Internet access was discontinued, and thanks to Musk’s mass layoffs, the service remained offline.
Elon has made several questionable changes to the platform since its $44 billion purchase in May 2022, including changes to the way blocking worked on the platform that led millions of users to flock to X-alternative BlueSky. X also experienced large-scale layoffs following Elon’s purchase of the platform.
