Yahoo! Super Mario Galaxy movie (TSMGM), the next animated film project from Nintendo and Illumination, is not far away now. Indeed, with the film’s release scheduled for April 3, 2026, it will be less than four months before we see Nintendo’s legendary mascot, the warp-pipe, return to the big screen.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Release Date
As I mentioned at the top, TSMGM will invite fans old and new to join the titular mustachioed hero on a cosmic adventure like no other on April 3, 2026.
Super Mario Galaxy movieThe release date for was confirmed in September. With Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri recently revealing that the film will be fully finished before the end of 2025, he’s also on track to meet that launch date.

Super Mario Galaxy movie cast confirmed
Possible spoilers follow for Super Mario Galaxy movie.
Here is the confirmed cast of characters for the film, as well as the actors who will voice them:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
- Brie Larson as Rosalina
- Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
The first six individuals appeared in The Super Mario Bros. movie. (TSMBM), aka the first animated film based on the ever-popular Mario video game franchise.
The only one missing from the main cast of the aforementioned film is Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong. It is unknown if Mario’s enemy-turned-friend will appear in TSMGM, but with online rumors suggesting that DK is set to star in his own animated spin-off, he might not be featured here.
Three other characters will also appear in TSMBMthe sequel.
We know Yoshi is set to feature, along with The Super Mario Bros. movie.The mid-credits scene all but confirms that he will be part of the proceedings. Yoshi wasn’t in TSMGM’s first teaser, but a recent film-related product leak, that of Pillsbury cookies of all things (according to IGN), also gave us our first look at Yoshi’s cinematic design.
Two people confirmed in the first trailer are Rosalina and Bowser Jr.
The first, which debuted in video games in 2007 Super Mario Galaxywill be voiced by Nintendo superfan Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The world). Meanwhile, Bowser’s son will be played by actor-director Benny Safdie (Uncut gemstones, The smashing machine).
Given TSMGM will be heavily inspired by the story told in the aforementioned Wii game and Super Mario Galaxy 2aka its Wii U sequel, it’s no surprise that this duo is part of the film’s plot. As for what his story will entail…
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Story Speculation
Potential spoilers follow for Super Mario Galaxy movie.
Nintendo has not released a story synopsis for TSMGM Again. Thanks to its trailer and what happened in its predecessor, we can learn a lot about its plot.
As its first teaser, well, teases, the Super Mario Galaxy games aren’t the only thing that influenced his story. Various shots in the trailer include major references to Super Mario Sun, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. WonderAnd Paper Mario. Thus, the legendary Nintendo mascot’s complete catalog of titles clearly inspired the story of this film and its broader universe.
It looks like Bowser Jr. will also be the main villain – or, at the very least, as a co-antagonist. The trailer reveals that he will try to save his father, who has been miniaturized and imprisoned for TSMBMThe climax of the scene, from Princess Peach’s castle.
For what purpose, we don’t know yet, but the smart money is on the father-son duo teaming up to steal more Power Stars – and that’s where Rosalina could come into the picture.
You see, Rosalina is the chief protector of the Luma, star creatures that first appeared in Super Mario Galaxyy and some of which can transform into Power Stars. Considering Bowser acquired a Power Star and threatened to use it to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if Peach didn’t agree to marry him, the prospect of more Power Stars falling into the hands of Bowser and his son is frightening for everyone.
As powerful as Rosalina is, she likely won’t be alone in defending the Luma. Peach and Toad, who will use a star portal to travel across the cosmos in Super Mario Galaxy movieshould ally themselves with a character with whom Peach has a long-standing connection. That is, provided they aren’t overwhelmed by the horde of Ninji that attack them in the trailer and the movie.
Mario and Luigi, who are seen traveling towards what appears to be Odyssey‘s Sand Kingdom in the teaser, are also expected to join the fight against Bowser, his brood and their minions after siding with Peach in The Super Mario Bros. movie.. Yoshi is also expected to join them if and when the brothers encounter the iconic long-tongued dinosaur on their latest adventure.
Hopefully a real synopsis of the story (and another trailer!) will be posted online before TSMGM is coming to theaters, which should give us even more information and/or clues about what to expect from Nintendo and Universal’s burgeoning cinematic universe.
Where can I watch the Super Mario Bros. movie? ?
Unfortunately, The Super Mario Bros. movie. does not appear in any of the catalogs of the best streaming services in the world.
You can rent or buy it on various premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms, including the Amazon store, Apple TV, and YouTube. If you were hoping to stream it “for free” – that is, on a service you already subscribe to – you’re out of luck.
Hopefully this will change as we approach TSMGMliberation. If so, its most likely destinations will be Netflix, which has been TSMBMand Peacock TV, aka the NBCUniversal-owned streamer, which is also the studio that distributed the film theatrically.
Will there be another Mario movie?
We don’t know. However, if Super Mario Galaxy movie is as financially successful as its billion-dollar predecessor – and there’s no reason to think it won’t – it’s inevitable that a third animated Mario film will be given the green light.
TSMGM and a potential sequel aren’t the only big screen adaptations that Nintendo Stars, the recently renamed film and television division of the iconic Japanese company, is working on.
A live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda The game series is expected to arrive in May 2027. Principal photography began this month (November 2025) in New Zealand, with cameras rolling four months after Nintendo confirmed who will play Link and Zelda in the upcoming film.
As I mentioned earlier, a Donkey Kong animated film is also reportedly in development, but Nintendo has yet to officially confirm it. As always, stick with TechRadar for news on this front when we have it.
