- A second trailer for Hail Mary Project was released
- This reveals a big surprise from the story
- The new sci-fi film hits theaters on March 20, 2026
A new trailer for the highly anticipated sci-fi film Hail Mary Project has been released, but it reveals a big spoiler about the story.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, the new film will see Ryan Gosling play Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there.
Such a mysterious opening premise means the story unfolds piece by piece as Grace slowly regains his memory of himself and, more importantly, why he ended up on a spaceship light years from Earth.
Although the big planet-saving mission he’s on isn’t something that’s hidden in the novel’s synopsis – Grace soon learns why he’s on a spaceship – there is another key plotline revealed that is held back later in the story.
Indeed, it’s not until you’re about a quarter of the way through the book that you discover a new character who ends up becoming a crucial part of the entire mission. This is a major plot reveal, because this is where the story really starts to hit its stride.
While the first Hail Mary Project The trailer only showed a glimpse of Ryan Gosling’s desperate mission to save the sun, the second release today (November 18) contains an even deeper look at the mysterious character – and that might mean you might want to skip it.
What does the second Hail Mary Project trailer reveal?
Spoiler alert! Turn back now if you don’t want to spoil key plot elements of Hail Mary Project.
Look on it
For anyone who has read the book or doesn’t mind spoilers, the mysterious character I’m referring to above is an alien called Rocky who Grace meets in space, and who ends up becoming one of the major protagonists of the entire story.
The introduction of the alien marks a crucial turning point in the narrative, raising the stakes of the mission to a whole new level. But while the book’s blurb and the film’s plot both hint at the possibility that Grace isn’t alone or has an “unexpected friendship,” the first trailer reveals that detail instantly.
Sure, it was just a glimpse of said alien that was teased in the first official trailer (for anyone who wants to go back and watch it in the video below, skip to the two minute and 25 second mark), but it’s still a major plot reveal if you ask me.
Look on it
In fact, I thought it was such a significant detail in the story that I didn’t even mention it when I first covered the trailer, but Amazon MGM Studios has since confirmed that it has no qualms about hiding the alien from audiences with the release of the second official trailer.
The new trailer includes plenty of snippets of scenes with the alien, and it’s not just short glimpses of its limbs. Throughout the three minute and four second trailer, several clips give audiences a glimpse of the alien’s full rock form.
Perhaps it’s to attract fans of the book like me, who might also be eager to see how the spider-like alien ended up taking shape in the film, or perhaps to attract those unfamiliar with the story into seeing the alien creature at the heart of it all. Whatever the reason, I still think the alien could have been kept out of the marketing materials.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but playing out all the different scenarios a movie could take, only to be surprised by the direction it takes or finally seeing the sets and costumes from a book come to life, is a big part of the enjoyment I get from watching a movie. Without it, the element of surprise is removed, which can make a story too predictable.
Amazon, MGM Studios, and Sony might as well have brought back the late Don LaFontaine to direct the trailer in typical ’80s fashion, where the entire plot is revealed through narration. To be clear, it’s not that bad, but I think our first glimpse of the alien could have waited until the movie’s premiere.
At least it won’t take long Hail Mary Project hits theaters on March 20, 2026 – who else is counting down until you can book our IMAX tickets?
