Showroom owners, traders targeted by gangs

Law enforcement agencies have launched raids across the city following a surge in extortion incidents. The investigation into the fire at a car showroom on New MA Jinnah Road is ongoing.

Investigators revealed that the suspects involved in the New MA Jinnah Road incident used mobile phone services rather than social media platforms to make threats. The group shot up the showroom before sending a text message.

The message read, “This is a trailer. If you don’t pay Rs 5 million by 7 p.m., the full movie will start.”

After targeting manufacturers, the extortionists turned their attention to showroom owners. Traders, builders and showroom owners reported receiving calls from national and international numbers. The authorities suspect the involvement of a gang led by Ahmed Ali Magsi.

Meanwhile, Rangers yesterday arrested a suspected extortionist, Qasim alias Qaso, in Malir. He was wanted in several cases of extortion and targeted assassinations. The Special Investigation Unit is questioning the suspect.

The police have recently received several complaints regarding the resurgence of extortion in the metropolis. In Malir district, the owner of a food center received a call from an international number demanding Rs 2 million as “party funds”. Malir city police have registered a case.

In another incident yesterday, a trader in Manghopir received an extortion demand of Rs100 million.
