- Microsoft released simple flexibility about Copilot on X
- It said: “Copilot finishes your code before you finish your coffee. »
- The responses that followed are quite interesting to read through, including comments on why Windows 11 updates are so buggy.
Microsoft intends to build on AI strengths – as Windows 11 moves firmly toward a future of Copilot and various AI agents – and a new article about X is stirring up even more controversy.
In case you missed it, many quarters have reacted negatively to recent revelations about the new AI features Microsoft is bringing to Windows 11 (including agentic AI, one of the latest buzzwords).
Rather recklessly ignoring this anger, as reported by Windows Latest, the official Microsoft account on X posted a simple flex as follows: “Copilot finishes your code before you finish your coffee.”
Intel immediately embraced the idea, with Team Blue’s business account on X responding by saying: “Now THAT’S productivity!”
Unfortunately for Microsoft, almost everyone who responded wasn’t so happy. Indeed, some of the countless ripostes to Microsoft’s boasts are so cold-blooded that if the words could be used as exotic cooling for a record-breaking overclocking attempt, we’d have a 10GHz processor in town (well, not quite, but you get the point).
The first feedback posted is actually a minor stroke of genius on the part of a graphic designer: “I can finish my coffee before right-click > task manager opens.”
And then report to the many people who can’t help but ask if this is why Windows 11 crashes after every update, or if Copilot terminates Windows 11 code and how that would explain a lot.
Analysis: timing is everything
There are a lot of comments about whether the Copilot code finish has anything to do with the state of Windows 11 and the bugs, in fact, but this is nothing new. In almost every post I’ve seen on Reddit or This all goes back to earlier this year, when CEO Satya Nadella informed us that up to 30% of Microsoft’s coding was done by AI.
So, at a time when there is an active backlash still rippling through online forums everywhere, caused by the way Microsoft is working to integrate more AI into Windows 11, you can see how it seems quite tone-deaf for the company’s social media staff to post something like this. That’s the problem with what happened here, regardless of Copilot’s actual coding skill, or lack thereof, which is the other major source of shots taken in the responses to Microsoft’s post.
Concerning the latter, there is no doubt that Copilot, or AI more broadly, can be a useful tool when coding. Programmers use it for more tedious tasks, although among coders there are arguments and doubts about even using AI for this (and how it promotes bad practices in general).
The more general concern is that using AI to help with coding will make people lazy over time and erode fundamental skills – ultimately leading to a programming world where AI takes over more and humans find it increasingly difficult to understand code and be able to solve it effectively when problems arise.
These all seem like valid concerns, but for now Microsoft just needs to tone down the outright enthusiasm for AI features and read the room. Because these recent developments with Windows 11 still leave some people wondering where this is all going — and why Microsoft isn’t tackling what they see as much more pressing issues in Windows 11, namely fixing existing issues and squashing bugs.
