Paul Mescal offered a rare look at the emotional weight behind his latest role in Hamnet.

In a new conversation with Us every weekthe actor spoke about filming the heartbreak-laden scenes for the upcoming drama, which follows the love story between William Shakespeare, played by Mescal, and his wife Agnes, played by Jessie Buckley.

For those who don’t know, the couple lost their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, and their devastation over this tragedy ultimately inspired Hamlet.

“You know what? This movie probably seems heavier on the surface than it was [to shoot]“, began Mescal.

He even explained that the emotional themes, although intense, did not require him to detach himself from them in any particular way afterwards.

Mescal continued: “Obviously there were some heavy scenes that we had to shoot, but there was nothing. [I did to unwind]”.

“I don’t usually come home at night. And… I probably should, but I don’t.”
