- ‘Moore’s Law is Dead’ YouTuber Claims Microsoft May Be Forced to Raise Cost of Xbox Consoles Due to Global RAM Shortage
- He explained that Sony had “planned ahead” and so there likely would be no increase in PS5 consoles.
- The cost of Xbox consoles could increase “very soon”, making it the third time since May this year
Microsoft is expected to further increase the price of Xbox consoles “very soon” due to a potential global RAM shortage.
That’s according to tech YouTuber “Moore’s Law is Dead” in his new video “OpenAI RAM Hoarding Leak” (via TGP), who spoke with multiple sources at retailers, memory makers, and partners.
They claim that due to soaring costs and OpenAI’s new agreements with Samsung and SK hynix to secure a significant share of the world’s DRAM supply in the near future, Microsoft may be forced to increase the price of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
“[Microsoft] “If you still want an Xbox for some reason at its current price, those prices could go up soon, or the supply could simply dry up as several of my sources have apparently been warned by Microsoft sales reps that this will affect Xbox Series consoles very, very soon. Sooner rather than later.”
Look on it
Although there appears to be a RAM shortage that could affect Microsoft, MLID said Sony would be spared from increasing the price of its PS5 consoles because it “planned ahead.”
“From what I’ve heard, Sony planned ahead, purchased near-low-cost amounts of RAM, and so it should be fine for months to come,” the YouTuber added.
“They have a lot of GDDR6, at least that’s what I’ve been told. Prices could eventually go up; I could see that happening next year… but there’s a reason Sony is slashing PlayStation 5 prices for Black Friday. They’re not just doing it as an extreme measure or because sales are bad. They can afford it; apparently they’re not worried about the RAM shortage, at least in the short to medium term.”
If Microsoft is forced to increase the cost of its hardware for a third time, prices could skyrocket. It first raised the cost of its consoles in May of this year, resulting in a $100 hike on all Xbox Series X and S models, and then again in September with an increase of up to $70.
It’s been a tumultuous year for Microsoft. Last month, it also announced major changes to Xbox Game Pass, which resulted in three improved plans and a massive price increase for the Ultimate subscription.
Now Ultimate costs $29.99 / £22.99 / AU$35.95 per month, down from $19.99 / £14.99 / AU$22.95. There is currently no option to purchase a 12-month subscription.
