The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is facing unprecedented torrential rains as well as severe flooding that has swept away streets and neighborhoods in several cities, with weather stress expected to continue for several days.

The National Meteorological Center issued alerts at different levels across the kingdom on Tuesday, reported Anadolu.

The warnings included red alert raised in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in western Saudi Arabia, as well as some areas in the eastern region.

With a lower orange severity level, the capital Riyadh, central Saudi Arabia and the southwestern provinces of Aseer and Jazan were alerted, but the population was nevertheless urged to remain vigilant in the face of expected rainfall .

In response to warnings of heavy rain, the kingdom’s relief authorities, including the Red Crescent Authority, have stepped up their preparations.

The Red Crescent has confirmed the full operational availability of its rescue teams to ensure uninterrupted ambulance service and rapid interventions, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Additionally, Saudi authorities also warned citizens to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines, especially in areas warned by high-level alerts.

Civil protection services urged the population to stay away from valleys, lowland areas and areas where rainwater could accumulate.

The scale of the flooding, with rising water levels sweeping cars off the roads and submerged buildings due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, was documented on social media.
