- Google recently made Android work with Apple AirDrop
- Some users are experiencing Wi-Fi related bugs
- For now, the feature is limited to Pixel 10 series phones
We were very happy and more than a little surprised when Google announced that AirDrop was working on Pixel 10 phones – without any help from Apple – but it seems the new feature isn’t working as well as it should for some users.
According to reports gathered by PiunikaWeb (via Android Central), the update is causing noticeable Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Apparently, as soon as the Quick Share menu is opened on Android, Wi-Fi is disabled and the device does not see any networks.
You can check out some of the complaints for yourself on the Pixel Phone help forums and on Reddit. Although some users have reported experiencing the same issue, it doesn’t seem like it’s affecting that many people.
So far, there has been no response from Google, nor has the official bug report been addressed at the time of writing this article. It’s also unclear whether this affects a particular type of Android device or a particular version of Android.
Potential workarounds
According to Android Central, there are several workarounds to try if you’re experiencing this issue. First, you can completely remove the Quick Share extension via Settings: tap Applications SO See all appsthen select the extension and choose Uninstall updates.
Second, you can turn off Wi-Fi before using Quick Share and then turn it back on. It’s not really an ideal solution, but it will at least let you share something from your device (albeit via Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi).
It’s unclear whether the new AirDrop compatibility is causing this issue, but it’s likely. Google has clearly done some clever engineering behind the scenes, and existing Android software and hardware may struggle to keep up.
So far, Apple has made no comment on any of this, although it is unlikely to be happy with the hack. There are good reasons why it won’t block new Android connectivity, especially if it starts expanding to more phones and tablets.
