The Legend of Zelda movie is officially in full production. Cameras have started rolling on the highly anticipated film, based on Nintendo’s fan-favorite video game series, ahead of its May 2027 launch.
So here’s everything you need to know about THE The Legend of Zelda movie.
The Legend of Zelda movie release date
It’s Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date for The Legend of Zelda live-action film to May 7, 2027. This will be a few weeks later than the release date we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it is…June 9, 2025
The Legend of Zelda movie will debut in theaters on May 7, 2027.
Initially, the Nintendo and Sony Pictures feature used the Tri-Force to hint at a March 26, 2027 launch. However, as the X/Twitter post above points out, it will arrive a few weeks later than expected.
Principal photography began in New Zealand on November 4, 2025. According to the Film and Television Industry Alliance website, production is scheduled to wrap on April 7, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda movie trailer: is there one?
No. And given that it won’t be released for another 18 months (at the time of this article’s initial publication), it’ll be a long time before we see one as well. Once a trailer is released I will update this section.

So far, only two actors have been officially announced as part of The Legend of Zelda movieThe cast of:
- Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link
- Bo Bragason as Zelda
Confirming the couple’s involvement in July, Nintendo revealed that Bragason and Ainsworth will play Zelda and Link, aka two of the franchise’s most famous characters, in the film.
Of the two, Bragason is undoubtedly the best known. She played roles in the Disney+ series Renegade Nelland the Prime Video television series The pier And King and Conqueror. However, playing the princess of Hyrule in this live-action version of the popular game series is arguably her biggest role to date.
Meanwhile, Ainsworth, who was hired to play the Zelda the male protagonist wielding the franchise’s main sword, will be recognizable to anyone who has seen Disney’s 2022 live-action/CGI remake of Pinocchio. Well, his voice will be, because he only voiced the main character in this movie. Other roles he has held include Son of Critch on CBC and Channel 4, and The Haunting of Bly Manor And The Sandman on Netflix.

There will be more casting announcements – official and leaked – in the coming weeks and months. In fact, fans think that Dichen Lachman, who stars in Breakup on Apple TV, secretly joined the project as Zelda’s main advisor, Impa. Their proof? In a video posted on X/Twitter (see above), Bragason’s heroine is seen conversing with someone who not only looks a lot like Impa, but also Lachman.
Further revelations will come in due time. We still don’t know who will play Zelda main villain of the series, Ganondorf, nor which secondary characters of the series Zelda The franchise’s packed catalog could be part of its package. Speculation on the story of The Legend of Zelda film
Potential spoilers follow for The Legend of Zelda movie.
Unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda movieThe synopsis of the story has not yet been revealed. However, based on its first images, it appears that it is inspired by the two most recent entries in the gaming franchise: Breath of the Wild (BotW) And Tears of the kingdom (TotK).
One of the biggest clues we have is what Zelda of Bragason is wearing. It’s a costume that’s no different from the main set of clothing she wears in the aforementioned games, so it’s more likely than not that this BotW And TotK have, at the very least, partly inspired this film.
There is other evidence to suggest that this is also the case. The official image of Link and Zelda in a lush environment is a clear nod to the idyllic Hyrulian fields, forests and hills that players explore in BotW And TotK. Add to that the fact that the duo actively works together – something they do in the aforementioned titles – and it stands to reason that this pair of games, which are some of the most beloved and beloved games in the world. Zelda series, are the chief influencers of this project.
This does not mean that others Zelda the games will not impact the film’s story.
On the one hand, the franchise’s timeline has become increasingly complex to follow with each new entry and, depending on the outcome of the events of TThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timesplit into three separate timelines (per IGN) before BotWarrival. From BotW And TotK were released, Nintendo updated the official timeline to show that these two titles are independent of the other three timelines (thanks to vooks.net for the screenshots).
This means if The Legend of Zelda movie is based on BotW And TotKhe will not be inspired by others Zelda games, right? Not necessarily. After all, other Nintendo films – both recent and upcoming, which I’ll cover in the next section – contain elements selected from various titles in their own game series. So it’s possible that this movie does something similar and includes, say, aspects of Sword to the sky, A link to the pastOr The wind awakener as part of his story.
But perhaps the most important question of all is: Will Link talk? He’s never spoken a word in the game series, so will Ainsworth follow in the footsteps of the franchise’s silent male protagonist or give him a voice? When speaking with comicbook.com, director Wes Ball declined to comment, so we’ll have to wait for the first trailer or the movie itself to know for sure.
Will The Legend of Zelda movie have a sequel?
We don’t know. Nintendo hasn’t discussed the possibility of a follow-up and, in reality, a lot depends on success. The Legend of Zelda movie East.
If – and it’s a big if – The Legend of Zelda movie enjoyed commercial success as great as TSMBMit is inevitable that a sequel will be made. Until it arrives in May 2027, that’s a question we can’t definitively answer.
