Younghoe Koo misses field goal without touching the ball in Giants’ wild first half

The New York Giants special teams are having a rough night in Foxborough, as kicker Younghoe Koo made the most bizarre first-time field goal attempt during the “Monday Night Football” game with the New England Patriots.

After tight end Theo Johnson failed to catch a touchdown, the Giants looked to make it seven points with a 47-yard field goal from Koo, who has kicked for New York in the last three games.

But when Koo threw his kick, for some reason he stuck his foot in the turf and ended up limping without making contact with the ball.

It looked like Koo’s left foot was too close to the ball, which could have caused it to fall. But he just didn’t follow through on the kick, and holder and punter Jamie Gillan was drilled by multiple Patriots for what is technically a sack in the stat sheet.

The game was a massive momentum shift as the Giants got a stop they desperately needed after a touchdown in what was a 17-0 game to start.

The reason for the big deficit was another special teams mistake for the Giants, but an impressive showing by the Patriots as Marcus Jones returned a Gillan punt 94 yards for the first touchdown of the game.

And things got worse for New York after the Patriots made it 24-7 on a perfectly thrown ball by Drake Maye to Kyle Williams, while Giants returner Gunner Olszewski was drilled by Christian Elliss on a kick return.

He fumbled the ball after helmet-to-helmet contact, and the Patriots recovered. They would end up adding three more points to the board.

New York entered this prime-time game with the season exactly opposite to the Patriots, winners of their last nine games. The Giants have lost six straight games and their overtime loss to the Detroit Lions last week officially eliminated them from playoff contention.

There was some hope, however, as rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was no longer in the concussion protocol. But special teams incidents crushed any momentum the Giants had, as they went into the locker room down 30-7 in Foxborough.
